Day Two: Köln

7 years ago, when I started studying German, I did a project on a city on the Rhine in the western part of Germany called Köln or in english, Cologne. It only felt right, that the first German city, I ever visited was this little place and we started our trip with a walking tour of Köln.

The old city gate

We made our way to the Sculpture park, essentially an outdoor art museum.

I found a tree there and climbed it!

One of the most provocative exhibits of the park, a car wrapped around a post, 20 feet in the area.

I love this weird, weird work.

We wandered over a windy bridge and across the Rhine to a park!

There was a playground...

... and it was awesome!

Then we finally caught our first at-a-distance glimpse of the soaring towers of the Kölner Dom.

The stereotypical Kölner Dom picture that has been engrained in my mind since I was a freshman in high school.

We headed back to our hostel and made lunch, I enjoyed some sticky rice that I picked up from the local asian grocery store!

We went to the Germanic and Roman museum, and this piece is one of the most famous from someone's personal collection. A gold crown covered in garnet, it was my favorite piece at the museum.

The Golden Ford Fiesta with wings is a controversial sculpture high above the old armory.

We had dinner at an Italian restaurant, and had our first Kölsch, a type of beer only allowed to be brewed in the area of Köln and a specialty of the area.

After dinner, we made our way to the Kölner Philharmonic to see a performance of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, the "Eroica" symphony. The Philharmonic performs in a beautiful concert hall, with an expansive foyer built upon many different levels. And at the coat check, they give our free Ricola cough drops! We got standing room seats, but when there were seats left empty, the ushers took us to any open seat available to watch the performance!

Waiting on the lovely couches in our "standing room" seats

The beautiful and very modern hall
