BO SKOVHUS!

Abe is in town visiting his former home with some of his friends from Berlin and Hanna's friend John is also in town for the weekend and everyone is staying with us at Dürergasse, meaning we are essentially running a hostel! We started our guests stay with a trip to the Wiener Staatsoper to see none other than Arabella, with the full intentions of meeting the cast after the show. You know what that means ladies and gents, officially meeting Bo Skovhus, the man who doesn't yet know we are getting married.

I realized I didn't really have any photos of my home away from home, so here is a shot of the Wiener Staatsoper from the front row of the Standing Room seats

The curtain call for Arabella! Time to run to the stage door!

Bo was about to leave, but I would hear none of it and asked politely for a photo and played the we are young singers card, he graciously signed our programs and...

With BO SKOVHUS!!!

We also stuck around and chatted with Camilla Nylund, who played Arabella, talking about singing and her advice for young singers: find a good teacher and don't start singing things too big for your voice before you are ready!

After our exciting evening we went to Zanoni and Zanoni to celebrate Kelly's birthday!

With the whole Dürergasse Hostel group!

At Zanoni and Zanoni, Jonathan, who is studying in Prague, told me about these Apple Bombs he had a bakery near his place, which were essentially baked apples wrapped in pie crust. Needless to say, I went home and started in on them right away. Best idea ever.

Birthday Extravaganza!

In honor of another year of my life, Mayo, Kay and Edita took me out to get Chinese food to celebrate my birthday. Mayo and I had been so crazy busy with school (we had UniWien finals), work, and for me John's visit, that we hadn't had time to connect since I got back to Wien. I was so excited to see them all and couldn't wait for chinese food! We ate at a Szechuan place out near them, and it was pretty good. But by Vienna standards it was amazing!!!

During dinner, they gave me an adorable gift which included birthday gift shaped pasta and we all know pasta is so much better when there are fun shapes involed! Which was so great in and of itself, but they told me it wasn't over yet. Mayo and I were going to go shoe shopping after lunch and I could pick out any pair that I want!

We went out to to a place on the U6, which had two stores full of reasonably priced shoes, aka my heaven. We wandered once through both, before taking a more determined walk through. I found several pairs of low heels I liked, but then I found a pair of brown suede boots. Now, I have been looking for brown boots for quite some time and since I bought leather boots last semester, I figure it's high time for some suede ones! We purchased them and hopped back onto the UBahn to meet up with Edita in the city for dessert.

We met up near Stephansdom and on our way toward Zanoni and Zanoni for birthday ice cream, Edita headed over toward Swarovski. I figured she was checking out the latest display, which is always something worth seeing, but then she headed inside. It wasn't even over yet. We went upstairs and they told me I could pick out anything I want. I found a necklace on a gold chain with a modern gold design encircling a good-sized Swarvski crystal. I pass by that store almost every day, but I never thought I would actually own anything from it. I kept my pinky up, as I walked out holding my little Swarovski bag.

We made our way to Zanoni and Zanoni and enjoyed some of their creative Gelato concoctions. I had actually been craving a milkshake for some time and got a Pistachio Chocolate one that was delicious! And the perfect end to a truly incredible day, full of easily some of the best birthday gifts ever, mostly because of the amazing (and surprising) experience, through which I got them! Thanks times a million to Mayo, Kay, and Edita!!!

Last Day of Gelato

Today is Vienna's last day of Gelato. A sad and depressing day, yes, but this also means that anytime I see a gelato place that is still open today - especially if it has a "Letzter Tag" sign - then I am totally allowed to buy a cone. I have reached a count of three today: cookies, pistazie, and pralinetta.

The Viennese tradition of gelato is actually Italian, but the Viennese have fully embraced this amazing art form. Stand gelato is very good if you are passing by, but if you are seeking gelato, my two favorites are Eissalon an Schwedenplatz and Zanoni and Zanoni. Zanoni has very traditional gelato, more ice like, and Eissalon has extremely creamy gelato, more like ice cream.

Zanoni is open all year, but Eissalon is closing today! So Jessica and Jane are going to pick up a liter on the way home for our Mexican Thursday dinner tonight. My only consolation for the disappearing of the gelato is that means tomorrow is the first day of heat! No more wear coats in class!

Update: Us eating our gelato later in the week!

Shopping, Wining, Dining, and Eising!

Went shopping on Mariahilferstrasse today! But not for myself, rather as the personal image consultant for my friend Abe, a Mexican from Texas, is in dire need of a warm coat. The 5th avenue of Vienna, Mariahilferstrasse has everything you could possibly need. Of course finding what you need at an afforadble price, takes the skill of a seasoned shopper, like me. We wandered for quite some time and eventually found an H&M coat he liked and I approved, but not in his size, so we went and got sushi.

After sushi I left for Mayo's place, where we were having dinner and on the way picked up a few sweets and treats. When I arrived I was warmly greeted by Mayo's brother, Kay, and her mother, Edita, who was already in the kitchen preparing the chicken. I helped Mayo make a Gugelhupf cake and when we were finished, we had some time to chat in both English and German. Dinner was fantabulous! It was so nice to have a real meal with real family and sit down and enjoy it together.

When we were finished, Mayo and I headed out to Stephansplatz to meet with a few of her friends from school. They introduced me to Zanoni and Zanoni, an Italian gelato place right off of Stephansplatz that has the best Eis creations! They are a bit expensive but not too bad if you split them and they are totally worth it! Vienna is known for it's Eis but really it all just Italian. We chatted - auf Deutsch - for hours and I learned a lot about the Austrian school system and about the matriculation process for Uni, which is good because I have to figure out how to register.

And after a while, we decided to head to happy hour at First American Bar, not the famous Alfred Loos one, but another American bar. We sat upstairs in this classy little place, in a cozy little booth and ordered half off - because how else can a student afford to go out - American named drinks. Yay understanding what is going on and not having to translate everything! By this point, my brain was pretty drained from trying to keep up with Dani's speedy German and I was beginning to feel tired, and I am sure the dim lighting and cosmo didn't help. We were here for about another hour, until the waiter rudely told us if we weren't going to order anything else, we had to peace. Which ended up working out well for my exhauseted self, although the girls were very upset by how rude he was, since in Vienna typically once you order something you can sit for as long as you like and not have to worry about it and it wasn't like the place was packed, there were several spaces open around us. We couldn't figure it out, but oh well, they lost a few clients.
